Industry Readiness Testing for TCH RTP Clearing & Settlement

(Accelerating Real-Time Payments Readiness Using Bhuma GP2)

Client Overview

leading payments technology leader, VocaLink, was developing The Clearing House (TCH) Real-Time Payments (RTP) network and required rigorous industry-readiness testing of clearing and settlement functionality.

Given the critical, nationwide nature of the RTP scheme, it was essential to validate system behaviour against TCH message specifications and operational documentation before broader industry adoption.

Bhuma was engaged to support this initiative using its GP2 innovation and testing platform, leveraging deep expertise in real-time payments, ISO 20022, and payment scheme operations.

The Challenge

VocaLink needed to:

  • Validate TCH RTP clearing and settlement behaviour
  • Ensure conformance to TCH message specifications and operational rules
  • Demonstrate industry readiness for participant onboarding
  • Achieve complete test coverage across business scenarios
  • Improve collaboration between business, requirements, and development teams
  • Execute large-scale testing efficiently and repeatedly

Traditional testing approaches were:

  • Heavily manual and time-consuming
  • Poorly traceable to business and scheme requirements
  • Inefficient during defect triage and remediation
  • Unsuitable for real-time, ISO 20022-based payment networks

Bhuma’s Approach

Bhuma deployed GP2, its payments innovation and testing platform, purpose-built for the TCH RTP scheme and fully aligned with ISO 20022 message specifications.

GP2 was selected due to Bhuma’s:

  • Deep expertise in payment scheme design and validation
  • Strong understanding of ISO 20022 semantics and clearing models
  • Proven capability in behaviour-driven, requirements-linked testing

The solution was configured to:

  • Execute business behaviour–driven test cases, reflecting real RTP operational scenarios
  • Maintain end-to-end traceability between:
  • Scheme requirements
  • Test cases
  • Executed scenarios
  • Defects
  • Integrate using IBM MQ interfaces with native ISO 20022 messages
  • Validate both standard and exception flows across clearing and settlement

Key Contributions

  • Behaviour-Driven Test Design
  • Developed test cases based on business behaviours and scheme rules, not just message syntax—ensuring realistic and meaningful coverage.
  • Full Requirements Traceability
  • Linked every test case directly to TCH RTP requirements and operational documentation, delivering:
  • Complete test coverage visibility
  • Clear alignment between business intent and system behaviour
  • High-Volume Automated Execution
  • Executed approximately 1,000 RTP test cases in under 40 minutes, significantly reducing testing cycles.
  • Production-Realistic Integration
  • Used IBM MQ and ISO 20022 messages to closely mirror live network conditions.
  • Efficient Defect Triage and Collaboration
  • Traceability between requirements, tests, and defects enabled:
  • Faster root-cause analysis
  • Clear ownership of issues
  • Improved collaboration between business analysts and developers
  • Highly efficient defect triage and resolution processes
  • Multi-Level Reporting
  • Delivered:
  • Executive-level summaries to track readiness and risk
  • Detailed developer reports pinpointing requirement-level failures

Outcomes

  • Industry readiness validated for TCH RTP clearing and settlement
  • Complete requirements-to-test coverage achieved
  • Test execution time reduced from days to minutes
  • Significantly faster defect triage and resolution
  • Improved collaboration between business and engineering teams
  • Higher confidence in ISO 20022 compliance and operational behaviour
